RAND Alumni Association Reunion

On August 6, 2024, RAND alumni from all decades returned to RAND’s Santa Monica headquarters campus to reunite and reconnect. This year’s event honored Natalie Crawford, president of the RAND Alumni Association, who is celebrating 60 years at RAND. Jason Matheny, RAND president and CEO, and past president Jim Thomson, thanked Natalie for her incredible dedication to the organization.

On November 9, 2023, approximately 250 RAND supporters and friends gathered in Santa Monica to celebrate RAND’s 75 years of research and analysis in service to the public good—and to explore ways that RAND can continue to make a positive difference in the world for the next 75 years.

Confronting the Climate Crisis

On September 20, 2023, RAND climate experts Robert Lempert and Benjamin Preston discussed the progress to date on battling climate change, the key challenges that lie ahead, and the range of possible solutions. Anita Chandra, vice president and director of RAND Social and Economic Well-Being, welcomed guests to the event, which was held at the Watergate Hotel in Washington, DC.

Mitigating the National Security Risks of Truth Decay

On February 9 and 10, 2022, RAND supporters Roni Haggart and Chuck Work, and Barbara Zwick and Janus and Joe Greer, hosted events in Naples and Coral Gables, Florida. The events featured a discussion with RAND researcher Todd C. Helmus, who spoke about the national security risks of Truth Decay. Helmus highlighted recent foreign disinformation attacks against the United States, identified how the U.S. and social media companies have responded, and detailed critical vulnerabilities that remain.

RAND hosted a special gathering on November 11, 2021 for supporters of the RAND Legacy Society, a group of donors who have made planned gifts to benefit RAND, Pardee RAND, or both.

A Conversation on Veterans Policy

RAND celebrated the launch of the RAND Epstein Family Veterans Policy Research Institute with an event hosted by Michael Leiter, chair of the RAND Board of Trustees, and trustee Chuck Hagel. The event was held in Washington, D.C., on October 27, 2021, and featured a discussion on veterans policy issues with the institute’s directors and other special guests.

For the past two decades, U.S. counterterrorism strategy has largely been focused on fighting terrorists abroad. But the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol laid bare the extremist threat at home, fueling momentum for new approaches to confront domestic terrorism. RAND hosted a conversation with Brian Michael Jenkins and Rajeev Ramchand in New York City on October 6, 2021, where they discussed the evolving terrorism threat.
