Our campaign is focused on finding solutions to complicated problems that are likely to have outsized importance during the next half-century. Tackling these problems—ones that pose existential risks if the world fails to act—will require diverse expertise, a mix of old and new analytic methods, creativity, and courage.
RAND is a true public servant. When RAND takes on a client, part of the agreement is that RAND will publish any results that aren’t classified. RAND thinks the public has a need and a right to know. This is critical for our democracy.
The last decade has seen breathtaking advances in a range of emerging technologies, from artificial intelligence to nanotechnology and biotechnology. Technologies like these have the potential to broadly improve human health and well-being, but they also pose existential risks if not governed wisely. RAND must help develop a robust method for governing during a time of transformational technological change.
Democracy is confronting threats around the world, and even the most advanced democratic societies are facing new stresses—political gridlock, polarization, and a loss of faith in civic institutions. This increases the urgency to address the competition between democracy and autocracy. RAND will help secure the future by finding new ways and better policies to bolster democracy’s strength, appeal, and success.
Greater extremes in weather, population growth, pollution, and migration require more resilient societies. Climate change, energy transitions, and the policy responses to both will profoundly affect a broad range of social, economic, and technological systems. RAND can design resiliency plans and develop long-term solutions to alleviate the impacts of climate and energy changes and help communities adapt to a changing planet.
Long-standing and worsening social and economic inequity have led to distrust in public institutions, decreased community cohesion, and suffering for many Americans. RAND will present solutions to the structural disadvantages that exist in this country and many others—access to quality education and health care, sustainable jobs, a responsive policing and criminal justice system—to help chart a path toward a more equitable society.
The Pardee RAND Graduate School injects a rich diversity of experience and talent into RAND, keeping the organization at the forefront of policy innovation. The continued evolution of Pardee RAND—one of the nation’s great engines for research talent—will help shape future leaders who are skilled at addressing complex challenges and developing policy solutions to improve the lives of people everywhere.
RAND research has informed many of the most important decisions of our time. Today, however, the situations we face are without precedent. To ensure we can address them forcefully when they arise, we will direct a portion of the funds we raise to discretionary uses and initiatives we can scale flexibly.
